How to Build Real Business Authority Through Video, Podcasting, and Owning Your Audience — with Jim Fuhs of Fusion Marketing

By Bubba Startz | REEL BIZ

In a world increasingly dominated by algorithms, AI-generated content, and rented audiences on social media platforms, the most powerful thing a business owner can do is own their audience. That was the central message in this week's episode of REEL BIZ, where I sat down with Jim Fuhs, founder of Fusion Marketing and a Marine Corps veteran who retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years of service. What followed was one of the most practical, honest conversations we've had on this show about content marketing, video strategy, and what it actually takes to build lasting business authority in 2025.

From the Marine Corps to the Marketing World

Jim's path to becoming a digital marketing expert isn't a typical one — and that's exactly what makes his perspective so valuable. After enlisting in the Marine Corps right out of high school in 1984, attending Paris Island, earning his commission in 1989, and ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2009, Jim transitioned into government contract consulting before discovering the world of digital marketing.

"I've always been somewhat of a tech nerd," Jim shared. "Even in the Marines, people would ask me to replace modem cards." That tech-forward mentality carried over when he attended Social Media Marketing World in 2018 and dove headfirst into Facebook Live, co-hosting a show that ran for five to six years. During the pandemic, his business grew substantially as business owners scrambled to go live and reach their audiences online.

That hands-on experience laid the foundation for what Fusion Marketing is today — a company laser-focused on helping businesses use video and content to tell their story and grow their brand.

Why Owning Your Audience Has Never Been More Critical

One of the most urgent themes in this conversation was the danger of building your entire business on borrowed platforms. Jim referenced a real-world example from a speaking engagement at Digital Wichita, where bots had taken down entire Facebook groups — and the businesses behind them had no way to reach their own community.

"It really goes back to the importance of controlling your audience, controlling your content," Jim said.

This is why Jim has become a strong advocate for Substack — a platform he describes as a "new category design" that blends publishing, video, live streaming, social feeds, and most importantly, direct email access to your subscribers.

"It allows you to get subscriber emails. You're building a list — which, even in these days of AI, is very important."

The ability to reach your audience directly, without an algorithm deciding who sees your content, is increasingly rare — and increasingly valuable. Substack provides that path at a low barrier to entry, making it accessible even for business owners who are just getting started.

The Content Repurposing Goldmine You're Sitting On

Both Jim and I agreed on this without hesitation: most business owners are leaving enormous value on the table by not repurposing their content.

A single podcast episode or video interview isn't just one piece of content. Done right, it can be:

  • 10–20 short-form video clips for Reels, Shorts, and TikTok

  • Quote graphics for LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook

  • A full blog post (like the one you're reading right now)

  • Email newsletters

  • Social media posts across multiple platforms for weeks or months

I gave a real example during our conversation — guest Melissa Dodson is still actively repurposing content from her REEL BIZ episode over a month later, consistently sharing it to LinkedIn and keeping her brand visible without recording anything new.

Jim put it perfectly: "People don't always start at episode one and catch up to current day. So there's nothing wrong with taking that old stuff and putting it out."

Think of your content library like a streaming catalog. When someone new finds you, your entire back catalog is brand new to them. Every past episode is an opportunity to earn trust, generate leads, and drive people deeper into your world.

AI Is Changing Search — Here's What That Means for You

Jim raised a critical point about how AI is reshaping the way people discover businesses and content. Search engines are now surfacing AI-generated answers at the top of results, and more consumers are going straight to tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini to get their questions answered — bypassing traditional websites altogether.

"I don't go looking for websites usually," Jim said. "And people aren't always questioning the AI answers they're getting."

This shift makes authentic, human-driven content more valuable than ever. Video interviews, podcast episodes, and personal newsletters create a body of evidence that you are a real person with real expertise — something AI cannot replicate. Platforms like YouTube and Substack are becoming primary discovery engines, and businesses that show up consistently with genuine content will have a massive competitive advantage over those that don't.

The takeaway? Your authentic voice is your most defensible marketing asset.

The Lowest Barrier to Entry in History — No More Excuses

When I asked Jim for his best advice for business owners with no video presence and a lackluster social media strategy, his answer was refreshingly practical:

"Start engaging with other people's content. Type something in the comments — more than just a like. That's going to get people interested in you. It's about building credibility."

From there, his recommended platforms for business owners are:

  1. LinkedIn — ideal for B2B connections and professional authority

  2. YouTube — the most powerful video search engine on the planet

  3. Substack — growing fast, direct audience ownership, and versatile content formats

  4. Google My Business & Bing — make sure people can find you and leave reviews

And when it comes to starting your own show? Jim's message is simple: the barrier to entry has never been lower. A phone and a decent microphone is all you need to get started. As I noted in our conversation — if you've ever FaceTimed your grandkids, you can do a video podcast.

"You can do it in your commute," I added. "Your podcast could be you in your car talking while you're stuck in traffic."

The real enemy isn't lack of equipment — it's paralysis. And the cure for paralysis is reps.

Building a Content Engine That Pays Dividends for Years

REEL BIZ was built to be exactly that — a content engine. Our guests don't just get an interview. They walk away with a suite of repurposed content they can use for months, and sometimes years. We've had guests reach out to Roku channels and other distribution platforms because of episodes we recorded over a year ago. That content is still working.

Jim's approach at Fusion Marketing mirrors this philosophy. Whether you're a plumber doing before-and-after videos on a jobsite or a consultant sharing insights on LinkedIn, the principle is the same: lead with the problem you solve, show up consistently, and let your content build trust on your behalf around the clock.

Final Thoughts

Jim Fuhs brought the kind of wisdom to this episode that can only come from decades of real-world experience — first leading Marines, then leading businesses through the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing. His message is clear, direct, and immediately actionable:

Own your audience. Repurpose your content. Show up as the real you. Start before you're ready.

If you're a business owner who's been waiting for the right moment to start building your content presence, Jim's advice is the same as it would be for any mission: execute now, adjust on the fly.
